In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s International Women’s Day Forum on March 5, we’re highlighting 10 inspiring leaders who have made their mark in advancing opportunities for women and girls. Angela Fuentes is the Co-Founder & CEO of Bad Hooman, a Flat Pattern Maker, and a pattern-making instructor at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). She’s been in the fashion industry for 12+ years and has owned her company since 2012.
What is the most important lesson you learned in your career?
One of the most important lessons I have learned in my career is to do what you love. When you love your work, you are able to appreciate failures and learn from them more easily. Loving my career means that I am more patient and gentle with myself while I learn new things and improve. Since I love my job in STEM, it feels like I never work a day in my life.
What advice would you give young women today?
The advice I’d give to young women today is to never give up and it’s never too late for anything. Don’t give up on your dreams and aspirations, even if others discourage you, because you can do anything. Find what you’re passionate about, follow your imagination, and great things will come to you.
How can we best engage the next generation to continue the momentum?
The best way to engage the next generation is to help them overcome the obstacles in their path and inspire them to follow their passions. Especially when you’re blazing a new trail, there are often days that young girls in STEM may feel discouraged. It’s important for us to tell them that’s okay and help them reflect on what’s holding them back. Once they understand the challenge they are facing, they can overcome their fears and conquer them.
