Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation today announced the finalists of the National Civics Bee®—middle school students from 27 states who have demonstrated exceptional civics skills and earned first place in their local and state competitions. These young champions will take the national stage in Washington, D.C., on November 12 to participate in the inaugural National Civics Bee Championship, highlighting the power of civic education and engagement.

“The National Civics Bee is shaping the next generation of innovators and leaders,” said Michael Carney, president of the U.S. Chamber Foundation. “In an increasingly complex world, civic knowledge is a competitive advantage. These middle schoolers aren’t just learning facts—they’re mastering the critical thinking skills essential for navigating policy, driving growth, and leading in a rapidly changing landscape. This isn’t just a contest—it’s a launchpad for future business and community leaders.”

Experiencing Democracy Firsthand

Finalists will take the stage at the inaugural national championship to showcase their civics knowledge, skills, and disposition. Beyond competing for top honors and prizes, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience the heart of American democracy firsthand, visiting key institutions and engaging with civic leaders in the nation’s capital.

“Studying civics has empowered me to understand how our government works and how I can be a part of it. It has also helped me understand my constitutional rights and the historical figures who fought for it. Civics is truly eye-opening,” said Aarit Koul, who won the Ohio State Finals and will be competing for first place in the national championship.

How the Competition Works

The 27 middle school finalists earned their spot in the national championship after winning rigorous competitions, organized in partnership with local chambers of commerce. Open to students in grades six through eight, the National Civics Bee invites students to submit essays addressing specific issues in their communities. Essay winners then advance to local and state-level competitions, where they answer questions about the country’s founding and government.

This year, the National Civics Bee has engaged more than 6,000 students from 110 communities across 28 states, bringing together parents, educators, business owners, public officials, and community leaders to make civics education a priority for America’s children. The competition will expand to all 50 states by 2026, in time for America’s 250th anniversary.

“To me, civics is the backbone of our democracy and the spark uniting community action,” said Ilyannie Gonzalez, who secured the top spot at the Washington State Finals. “I’m excited for what lies ahead as we continue to embrace our responsibilities as young citizens and the ideals that bind us as a country.”

2025 Applications Are Now Open

As of October 15, 6th, 7th and 8th graders across the country can apply for the 2025 National Civics Bee. Applicants will respond to a three-question essay prompt, sharing their ideas for making a positive impact in their communities. Students may download this essay guide to help with the process. All essays are due by February 4, 2025. Visit our How It Works page to learn more.

Students who participate in the National Civics Bee gain knowledge about American democracy, practice engaging respectfully and constructively, and build trust in others and institutions. As they compete for prizes, they strengthen their civics, writing, and public speaking skills, and form friendships with other young leaders along the way.
